Winter might be our favorite secret season on the Shenandoah. The crowds thin out, the river runs quiet, and there's nothing better than watching your breath rise from the hot tub on a cold, starry night. Here's how our family would spend a cozy winter weekend at Canoe.
Friday: arrive, unwind, soak
Stop for groceries on the way in. Food Lion and Walmart in Luray are both about 25 minutes from the house. Once you're settled, light the fireplace, pour something warm, and head out to the hot tub. With the river below and the stars above, it's the best welcome to the valley.
Saturday: caverns, custard and a cozy dinner
Start the day with pastries and espresso at Gathering Grounds Patisserie & Cafe in Luray. Then go underground at Luray Caverns, just 15 minutes from Canoe. It's a great winter outing because the weather outside doesn't matter. Your ticket also includes the Car & Carriage Caravan Museum.
For lunch, it's Spelunker's for burgers and hand-cut fries, and you MUST have the frozen custard, even in winter. In the afternoon, stroll the Hawksbill Greenway along the creek, then warm up with a local beer at Hawksbill Brewing Company.
For dinner, book a table at Osteria Maria. The lasagna is the best, and don't skip the crème brûlée. Back at Canoe, finish the night with a game of pool in the game room.
Sunday: slow morning, then one more soak
Sleep in, make breakfast in the full kitchen, and enjoy the river views from the windows. If you're up for one more stop on the way home, The Apple House is famous for its apple cider donuts.
